Following the damage to the Estlink 2 subsea electricity cable, NATO will increase its presence in the Baltic Sea. Finland and Estonia, whose energy supply was affected, requested this reinforcement after suspecting potential sabotage. The incident, which involved a ship potentially linked to Russia's "shadow fleet," has raised concerns about the security of critical infrastructure in the region. NATO is assisting in investigations and multiple other disruptions to communication cables in the Baltic Sea have also been reported. The main conceptual idea is that the damaged subsea cable and suspicion of sabotage have escalated tensions in the Baltic Sea, prompting NATO to bolster its presence for security reasons.
